South African merit ratings explained

Merit ratings are part of the handicapping framework. They are useful context, not standalone predictions: race shape, conditions, weights and current form still matter.

The useful framework

Start with the user’s actual decision. Identify the race conditions or service terms first, then add only the evidence that changes the decision. For racing analysis that usually means course, distance, surface, draw, weight/ratings, recent form and likely pace. For a paid selection service it means transparency, proofing, realistic odds availability, staking, sample size, drawdown, price and cancellation or renewal terms.

Avoid single-factor conclusions

Racing variables interact. A draw observation can matter differently by course and distance; a rating can be informative without being predictive on its own; and a profitable historical sequence can still be followed by losses. Use several relevant signals and keep uncertainty visible.
